The Glengarry Bhoys Close Out the Spring 2007 Season at the Center
HOMER- On June 15th and 16th at 8:00 PM, the Center for the Arts continues its tradition of closing the spring season with North America's most sought after Celtic rock band, The Glengarry Bhoys. They will once again bring their high-energy blend of traditional and contemporary music to the Center for a two-night stand as the Center celebrates its second year of operations as a community center dedicated to the celebration of the arts.
The Glengarry Bhoys signature sound fuses the roots of their Glengarry heritage with the multi cultural sounds of modern Celtic and contemporary music. Their energy and good humor, which is as much a part of a Glengarry Bhoys' performance as their musical abilities, brings a family oriented and all around fun time to any audience as attested to by their enthusiastic reception from the sell out crowds at last year's Center's concerts. Labeled "The band that prevents you from being still", this group has played to sold-out audiences all over North America and the United Kingdom. Celtic Beat Magazine claims them as, "One of the best concerts I have ever seen, strong vocals and a band with energy to die for."
The Glengarry Bhoys began some nine years and six albums ago and have established themselves through a devoted work-ethic of touring and recording. They have accomplished much in this relatively short span of time, thrilling audiences internationally and selling in excess of 95,000 copies of their records independently, a sure signal of their appeal and strength of their craft. Their most recent CD Mill Sessions was featured in April on the national CBC radio show "Fresh Air".
The Bhoys have their roots in Glengarry, Ontario. The area was settled by Scots highlanders in the early 1800's but has also been home to a strong French element for some 400 years. These groups have lived in close harmony, perhaps originally born of their mutual disdain for the British, but also given their mutual interests in farming, religion, politics and music. The inter-marriage of French and Scots created a unique blend of culture. This harmony is nowhere more evident than in the Bhoys' music, which draws on their combined musical heritages.
The deep roots of these cultures resonate with many a music lover and none more so than the band themselves. The common observation of those who have been enchanted by their live shows is that clearly, this is a band in love with music and performing. As one reviewer was moved to report, "if these Bhoys don't get you a-movin' then your skin's on way too tight." The energy and good humour, as much a part of their shows as their musicianship crosses all cultures and ages and it is not uncommon to see a grandparent and grandchild dancing together in the aisles!
Performing on guitar, bagpipes, Uileann pipes, fiddle, bodhran, keyboards, bass, percussions, whistles and trumpet, along with Step dancing, these five energetic individuals have taken 175 years of Celtic music in Canada and raised the bar to new heights.
